Sumario:The Athenian Cleruchies and Apoikias constitute one pivotal instrument for the expansion and the consolidation of political power enabling Athens to evolve as the hegemonic polis in the Aegean Sea. This study presents a comprehensive discussion of all Athenian settlements in the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. with a focus on the formal analysis of the settlement types as well as the evaluation of political functions of the respective colonies.
