| Sumario: | Professor Dorfman gives a thorough evaluation of how Thorstein Veblen became the Thorstein Veblen we know today. Dorfman shows how Dr. Veblen was exposed to the various superficial and spurious philosophical trends running through his years at Carlton College Academy. It was not Kant and Kierkegaard that introduced Veblen to the contemporary view of humanity, but charlatan religious and political amateurs that ruled the roost and set the philosophical tone at Carlton. This came in addition to the arrogance of the mostly New England middle class he met in his forming years. Whereas "The Theory of the Leisure Class" (1899) is a cumbersome read with an obvious tendency to latinate English, Professor Dorfman's opus "Thorstein Veblen and his America" (1934) is extensive, but an easier read.
