Descripción
Sumario:In southeastern Portugal, overlooking the Rio Guadianaand surrounded by picturesque grassland scenery, stands a former Franciscan monastery, the Convento Sao Franciscode Mertola. The monks abandoned it in 1834; by over thepast decades a Dutch family of artists had turned it intoa miniature paradise for flora and fauna, a kind of Noah̕sArc for endangered species. Chief among them is the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), characteristic of the Alentejoregion that has found an excellent breeding ground here.
