Sumario:This video involves Lizette having difficulty differentiating between trauma-related (i.e., maladaptive) avoidance and adaptive avoidance. She asks the provider for assistance in determining whether her hesitance to attend a family gathering is maladaptive or adaptive. The provider gathers more information and learns that Lizette’s hesitation stems from the fact that her uncle, who abused her during childhood, would also be present at the family gathering. The provider reinforces Lizette’s decision to not attend the family event as an adaptive measure due to the importance of maintaining precaution and not putting herself in situations that could be dangerous (such as being around/associating with her perpetrator).
