Descripción
Sumario:The Essai sur la Monarchie autrichienne en son état actuel en 1790 offers an overall and unprecedented panorama of the conditions of the Habsburg monarchy in the international context at the beginning of the French Revolution. The essay, intended for a non-specialist reader to be identified in all probability with the betrothed of the future emperor Francis II, examines the institutional, economic, military and religious context of the monarchy, establishes its historical and political legitimacy and proposes a disenchanted evaluation of the work of the recently deceased Emperor Joseph II. Taken as a whole, it constitutes an exceptional testimony to the processes taking place in the heart of Europe in an era of dramatic changes. Derek Beales Professor Emeritus of Modern History at Cambridge University and fellow of Sidney Sussex College, he is the author of a fundamental two-volume monograph on Emperor Joseph II (Cambridge University Press, 1987 and 2009) and of numerous essays and volumes on the age of the reforms, the British history of the nineteenth century and the Italian Risorgimento. Renato Pasta teaches Modern History at the School of Humanities and Education of the University of Florence. He deals with cultural and political history of the age of the Enlightenment and the history of printing between the eighteenth century and the Restoration. He edited the critical edition of the History of Milan by Pietro Verri .
