Sumario:The phase understood by historians as a phase of consolidation or professionalization of the press, beginning of the Republic until the 1930s, corresponds to a relevant period of the work of the writer Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) as a journalist. The intention of addressing the articles published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, a periodical founded in 1875 as a bastion of republican ideological issues, allows us to situate the beginning of Lobato's production in 1913. The 1930 limit is justified by the historical moment, that is, the transition from a rural country to a state in rapid urbanization with the advent of the Vargas era. As a fleeting vehicle, the newspaper presents itself as an opportunity to review a less "literary" aspect of the writer. The observation of the set of texts produced as articles for O Estado between 1913 and 1923 reveals a writer in close harmony with the vehicle in which he participated and helped to build, be it in the sphere of ideals, or in the circle of activities carried out within the newspaper. Lobato is, in effect, a journalist actively participating in the political and social ideals of a group whose influence went beyond the so-called self-proclaimed neutrality of the newspaper. There was a country project largely common to the writer and newspaper, or rather, between the attentive publicist and the successful periodical. "An old plague", "Urupês" or the almost unremembered "Between two crises" are texts that, placed side by side and read in the sequence and frequency that appear in O Estado,
