Sumario:The study of the interrelationships between language and society, based on a journalistic corpus, is the primary focus of this book. It deals with the investigation of the system of forms of treatment in the newspapers of the São Paulo Black Press - a movement carried out by black people and aimed at this population in the period after the abolition of slavery in Brazil - and in O Combate - a newspaper with a wider circulation in the city of São Paulo. São Paulo at the beginning of the 20th century. The forms of treatment represent a privileged example of the relationship between linguistic choice and its social motivator. They were analyzed from the relation of some theoretical points of view, namely: the study of the newspaper as a hypergender, proposed by Bonini (2003, 2004, 2006), in order to evaluate the peculiar characteristics of each genre the newspaper; the proposal to analyze the interlocutor's situation at the time of Soto's statement (2001); the investigation of the interactivity marks, proposed by Andrade (2008); and Brown and Gilman's semantics of power and solidarity (1972 [1960]). The study of this linguistic phenomenon revealed the need of black people of the period to conquer a space in the São Paulo society of the time and, thus, the Black Press represented a space for the circulation of their voice in society.
